THE BENEFITS OF A LEARNERSHIP

Learnerships work so well in South Africa because it’s a way for people to get a formal qualification while working and earning a salary.

So what is a learnership?

It is a work-based learning programme that in the end provides you with an NQF registered qualification.  Learnerships are directly related to an occupation or field of work, such as, electrical engineering, hairdressing or project management and are managed by the SETAs (Sector Education and Training Authorities).

The 5 top benefits of a learnership for employers:

  • Learnership employees are more likely to do the correct thing the first time and make fewer mistakes.
  • They are more likely to "get the best" out of the job and be more productive.
  • They are more independent workers and can think for themselves.
  • They are more motivated because they know that what they are doing is important to the overall business.
  • They know what you want from their career and will therefore be more committed to the company.

Learnerships are also an excellent benefit to employers as they are able to claim grants if they provide training that culminates into qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF). These grants will be linked to the actual cost of training and not linked to levy payments. It will be possible in most instances for employers to get back more in the form of these grants than what has been paid in levies if the employer assists learners to complete learnerships.

The benefits for the learner:

  • Provide easy access to learning
  • Increase employment opportunities
  • Assist in career-pathing and self-development
  • You learn while you earn
  • Receive a formal qualification
  • Learnerships fast-track your career in your current employment
  • They serve as an entrance into the industry for unemployed learners
